Burda Baith 13.5

Qasīdat al-Burda, also known as "Poem of the Mantle," is an ode of praise dedicated to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. This beautiful poem was composed by the renowned Sufi mystic, Imam al-Busiri from Egypt. The poem's original title is al-Kawākib ad-Durrīya fī Madḥ Khayr al-Barīya, which translates to "The Celestial Lights in Praise of the Best of Creation." Al-Burda holds significant popularity within the Sunni Muslim community, being a heartfelt tribute solely to Muhammad. Legend has it that Muhammad miraculously cured the poet of paralysis through a dream visitation, where he draped him in a mantle or cloak.

Bānat Suʿād, initially titled Al-Burdah, is a poem composed by Kaʿb bin Zuhayr and recited in front of Muhammad after his conversion to Islam. Moved by the poetry's reverence, Muhammad expressed his admiration by wrapping his own mantle around Kaʿb. Despite this historical anecdote, the original Al-Burdah does not enjoy the same level of recognition as the rendition by Imam al-Busiri, where Muhammad's act of clothing Kaʿb takes place in a dream vision as relayed in Imam al-Busiri's poetic masterpiece.
